吕后跟随刘邦打天下，还曾被楚霸王项羽俘获，当了两年人质。这些经历都锻炼了吕后，为她的政治生涯打下基础。

比如，让吕家女人和刘姓诸侯王结亲，在婚姻上绑定刘吕两家。

在政治上，吕后一面迫害刘姓诸侯王，一面分封吕家人为诸侯王，率先打破“非刘姓不得为王”的规矩。

比如，吕后逼死了两任赵王，封自己的娘家人吕产为梁王，吕禄为赵王，燕王病死后又封吕通为燕王。

到吕后去世时，刘邦的儿子中仅剩下代王刘恒和淮南王刘长，吕后迫害刘姓诸侯王的做法，让刘姓诸侯王敢怒不敢言。

吕后死后，功臣勋贵和刘姓诸侯王终于发起反击，诸吕被杀，大臣们最后决定迎立刘邦的第四子、代王刘恒为新的皇帝。

吕后白白折腾了一通，在最后落得个身死族灭的下场。

吕后所封的几个吕姓诸侯王，如果能到分封的诸侯国就任，掌握封国的地方实权，中央关键位置上再留下几个人，大臣们和刘姓诸侯王也不敢诛杀诸吕。

可惜的是，吕家人贪图享乐，并不想离开长安到封国，最终没有斗过朝臣。

可见，吕后死后吕家迅速倒台，和吕家人树敌太多以及吕家后人没有挑大梁的有关。
