据《今日美国》报道，钩状螺旋体可通过动物尿液传播。人类接触了污染的食物或土壤后，细菌可通过黏膜或伤口进入人体。感染发病症状包括发烧、头痛、腹泻、黄疸和皮疹等，若不经治疗最终可导致肾衰竭、脑膜炎、呼吸窘迫等。

环卫工经常接触垃圾袋沾染老鼠尿液，他们长期工作后手套变湿破损导致防护力下降，或者用手套接触面部，都可能被感染，近期已有两人住院。专家建议，环卫工应勤换手套，不要摸脸减少风险。

解决鼠患问题，对纽约就很难了。超过三百万只老鼠很容易对鼠药进化出抗药性，肥硕的身体让捕食动物望而生畏，体内的鼠药还会把捕食动物毒死；近期有专家发明了老鼠避孕药，称这些药物“比披萨还好吃”，如何大规模铺药让老鼠吃下去，也是个问题。
